Our History

Rachel Long Morgan CenterCareer Planning & Life Planning programs began as a UC Irvine Extension community service organization in 1970, when three women, Lou Anderson, Sylvia Lenhoff and Muriel Shishkoff, had a vision to create an outreach program to serve women in career transition. The Women’s Opportunities Center was born in the entrance of UC Irvine’s Crawford Hall Gymnasium, consisting of a table, three chairs, and a telephone.

In 1992, the Rachel Long Morgan Women’s Opportunities Center building, including counseling rooms, a resource library, and a computer lab, was built on the UC Irvine campus through funds raised by community donations. Over the past decade, our programs have grown to meet the needs of men and women in career and life transition. In 2005, we began to offer programs and services that support community members transitioning to retirement. Today, the Women’s Opportunities Center provides a welcoming environment for clients in all of our Career Planning & Life Planning Programs.

Our Vision for the Future

We look back with great pride on a rich history dedicated to serving our community; we look forward to a future brimming with promise. Our purpose is clear: to support men and women in the successful navigation of career and life transitions. Our dedicated volunteer organization offers support, resources, and a sense of belonging to all who seek our assistance. We can help you find the career you have always dreamed of, or help you craft the kind of retirement you have looked forward to all your adult life.

We invite you to join us as a client or as a member of our volunteer team. Gain control over your personal or professional direction as a client; gain a sense of purpose as a volunteer. Either way you will find a supportive environment and a group of dedicated people who share a desire to help you discover "options for new beginnings."
