English Language Learner (ELL) Training a Success for UC Irvine Extension
IRVINE, Calif. – October 20, 2000 – In today's K-12 school systems in California, the number of English Language Learners (ELL) is rapidly increasing. With the dissolution of bilingual education, students are continually struggling to understand their schoolwork presented in English instruction only. Teachers need assistance in learning new strategies for delivering information in the classroom. With the help of a statewide grant, UC Irvine Extension conducted English Language Learner (ELL) Institutes during summer and fall of this year, successfully training 160 Orange County teachers in the latest methodologies and strategies for teaching K-12 English learners.
UC Irvine Extension was one of many ELL Institutes across the state. At a recent meeting for all Institute directors, it was announced that UC Irvine Extension had conducted the most successful ELL Institute in the state. While all other schools trained an average of only 50-70 teachers, UCI trained twice that average – making a significant contribution to the success of English-language immersion classroom instruction in the Southland.
"Our strong dedication to marketing the value of this training to our school districts and our efficiency and organization in conducting the training contributed to the overall success of the program. As a result of this accomplishment, we plan to reapply for funds to continue the grant next year," stated Peggy Hall, Acting Director of Education at UC Irvine Extension.
UC Irvine Extension is the continuing education arm of UCI, drawing on the considerable talents and resources of the University, while complementing UC Irvine degree programs with courses and services primarily for those working adults who already have degrees. Extension also addresses ongoing corporate needs for employee training and education.
