UCI Distance Learning Center Wins $689,000 P.O.S.T Contract
Irvine, Calif. – Feb. 3, 2004 – The Distance Learning Center of the University of California, Irvine has been awarded a contract to deliver education and training for California law enforcement personnel by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). UCI’s Distance Learning Center (DLC) will provide expertise in the delivery of online video-based courses covering topics like investigation of computer crimes, community-based policing and terrorism response. The Distance Learning Center will also create some new video based courses. The contract is valued at $689,000.
"This project is the largest single contract in the history of the Distance Learning Center," said Gary W. Matkin, Dean of Continuing Education at UCI. "It will allow us to employ our skill, knowledge and know-how for a very deserving customer."
Jody Buna, senior consultant for POST is also very enthusiastic. "We’re excited to have this relationship with UCI to provide us with both the technical expertise we need to enter new territory in law enforcement training and the academic oversight we need to assure that California’s law enforcement community receives the most up-to-date knowledge. We expect that with UCI’s help, POST will continue to set the standard for police officer training in the country and in the world."
Dr. Jia Frydenberg, director of the Distance Learning Center, will serve as project manager. Larry Cooperman, director of instructional design and technology will lead technological development.
