UC Irvine Extension Partners with Orange County Society of Investment Managers

Face-to-Face Review Course Prepares Investment Managers for Upcoming CFA® Level 1 Examination

IRVINE, Calif. – July 1, 2005 – UC Irvine Extension announces open enrollment for a comprehensive new review course, taught by a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst®) professional and designed to prepare investment managers for Level 1 of the CFA examinations. The program is offered in collaboration with the Orange County Society of Investment Managers (CFAOC), and will include Level 2 and 3 preparation courses in the future. The first course begins on Tuesday, July 26th at the UC Irvine Extension Campus.

The program is designed to fast track students toward achieving the CFA designation – the internationally recognized symbol of professional excellence in the field of investment management. It will feature exploration of the following topics: Ethical and Professional Standards, Quantitative Methods, Economics, Financial Statement Analysis, Portfolio Management and Asset Valuation.

"The number of candidates taking the CFA examination has increased tremendously, therefore demand has grown to offer programs that prepare professionals for exam success," said Michael Ashley Schulman, CFA, Education & Career Development Chair for the CFAOC and Director, Senior Portfolio Manager at Hollencrest. "Our goal in partnering with UC Irvine Extension is to build a strong program that will ensure students planning to take the exam are thoroughly prepared and versed in exactly what to expect."

The 3-part CFA exam is considered the most rigorous certification designation in the financial industry. The average participant takes about 4– years to complete the examinations. Pass rates for June 2004 indicate the intensity of the exam – Level I: 34%, Level II: 32%, Level III: 64%. Statistics show that exam takers who do the readings but don’t participate in study programs are less likely to pass.

“This partnership is truly a mutually beneficial coming together,” according to Robert Panetti, CFA and CFAOC President and Vice President at Capital Reserve Advisors, Inc. “CFAOC has been interested in providing an instructor-taught course locally for more than two years. In the past, we referred people to the Los Angeles Society, but many Orange County residents were put off by the long drive. UC Irvine Extension was also looking to better serve the financial community, and I believe the UCI/CFAOC partnership is a great match."

UC Irvine Extension will license texts from Schweser, one of the top national providers on this subject matter. The course covers the 10 broad topic areas in the CFA Exam Candidate Body of Knowledge which include:

  • Ethical and Professional Standards
  • Quantitative Methods
  • Economics
  • Financial Statement Analysis
  • Corporate Finance
  • Analysis of Equity Investments
  • Analysis of Fixed Income Investments
  • Derivatives
  • Analysis of Alternative Investments
  • Portfolio Management

The Orange County Society of Investment Managers (CFAOC) was established in 1983 by several practitioners working and living in Orange County. Most of the original members were affiliated with professional investment organizations in the greater Los Angeles area but were seeking a forum for investment ideas a little closer to home. In 2000 CFAOC received its independence from LASFA and became a full society of CFA Institute. Establishment of the group heralds the presence and growing importance of a financial and investment community in the Orange County area. For more information visit http://www.cfaoc.org.
