Intellectual Property Law In High Tech: It's What You Don't Know That Can Hurt You

UC Irvine Extension Offers a Two-Day Course for Entrepreneurs, Inventors, and Professionals in High-Tech Companies

IRVINE, Calif. – March 16, 2006 – UC Irvine Extension is offering a two-day course designed for inventors, high-tech project managers, developers, engineers and entrepreneurs entitled “Intellectual Property Law for the High-Tech Industry.” The course will be held April 28 and 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the UCI Learning Center in Orange, Calif.

“This course explores some of the most common IP issues faced by engineers, managers, and other professionals working in today’s high-tech industry.” said Rogelio C. Rodriguez, director of engineering and science programs at UC Irvine Extension.

The course will cover common intellectual property (IP) issues faced by high-technology professionals as they compile an IP portfolio. Topics will include identifying different types of IP, identifying intellectual property eligible for protection, minimizing the risk of infringing on a competitor’s patent, maximizing patent value through licensing and enforcement, and review of how a patent application is prepared. There are no prerequisites for the course and materials will be provided at the first class meeting. Case studies and guest speakers augment the course lectures.

The course instructor, Sabing H. Lee, J.D., a partner at Knobbe, Martens, Olson & Bear, LLP, specializes in patent protection and other matters of intellectual property. His law practice includes strategic patent procurement, patent portfolio management, as well as licensing and counseling on infringement issues. He represents a wide range of clients in the technology, medical device, building materials and semiconductor industries.
