The seminar will discuss the International Organization for Standardization’s (ISO) standards, with an emphasis on ISO 14001 which covers environmental management systems.
The International Organization for Standardization is a network of national institutes spanning more than 150 countries that develops standards for governments, businesses and consumers. The ISO has more than 15,000 standards ranging from traditional industries such as agriculture and construction to the newest information technology developments such as digital coding of audio-visual signals for multimedia applications.
The one-day course focuses on environmental management systems. This standard helps organizations of all types improve their environmental performance while at the same time making a positive impact on business results. Those in the environmental health and safety, IT, human resource and management professions are encouraged to come and learn about how they can improve productivity while adhering to these environmental standards.
“Companies are always looking for a ways to support environmental performance, as well as implement cost-effective practices,” said Rogelio C. Rodriguez, director of engineering and science programs at UC Irvine Extension. “By complying with environmental standards and improving the management of these activities both goals can be achieved.”
The seminar will be taught by Dean Halwani, M.S., Environmental Health and Safety Manager for Spartech Plastics, who has in-depth experience in the manufacturing, industrial, civil, quality system and environmental health and safety fields. His areas of expertise include the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS), the ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System and Management System Integration. Halwani is a certified ISO 14001 Environmental Auditor with RABQSA and is a certified ISO 9001 Quality System Auditor.
