IRVINE, Calif. – May 24, 2006 – For several hundred years the West has been intrigued by the mystique and beauty of the faraway Himalayan culture of Tibet. For those interested in learning more about the culture, UC Irvine Extension is offering “Introduction to Tibetan Culture” this summer as a part of its Specialized Studies Programs in Buddhism and Yoga.  The three day class will be held Thursday, July 6 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 11 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and on Thursday, July 13 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at UCI Extension Building H in rooms 162 and 163 located on the UC Irvine Campus.

“A couple of years ago, the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art brought an amazing exhibit of 200 Tibetan sacred objects, ‘Tibet: Treasure from the Roof of the World,’ which sparked community interest in the culture,” said Molly Schneider, director of Yoga and Buddhism Studies Programs at UC Irvine Extension. “In response to this escalated interest from the community, UC Irvine Extension is pleased to launch this new course aimed at satisfying the quest for understanding the context that gave rise to these exquisite objects – and that contributed to the wisdom that the Dalai Lama and other spiritual teachers have brought to the West.

The course will cover the country’s rich history from several viewpoints, including geographical, religious and political. It will also discuss topics such as society and family, festivals and holidays, art and literature and how the Tibetan culture has been shaped. Several slide and video presentations will be provided to enhance the visual aspects of the learning experience.

“When asked about what they know about Tibet, most people will mention high mountains, pristine landscapes and of course the Dalai Lama,” said Federica Venturi, course instructor of Introduction to Tibetan Culture. “This course will give attendees a much more in-depth and enhanced understanding of this unique country and its culture.”

Venturi is a Ph.D. candidate in Tibetan Studies in the Department of Central Eurasian Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington. She holds a degree in Tibetology from the University of Rome, Italy and has traveled in Western and Central Tibet in the course of research expeditions. She is also a member of the International Association for Tibetan Studies.

The course cost is $210 which includes all material fees. To register for the class visit Introduction to Tibetan Cutlure . For more information on this course and the Specialized Studies Programs in Buddhism and Yoga email yogastudies@uci.edu or call (949) 824-6335.
