UC Irvine Extension Invited to Present at the 6th International Congress for E-Learning in Brazil

Southern California University Chosen to Lecture on Trends and Global Influences in Learning on Professional and Organizational Performance and Their Impacts on Business Results and Opportunities and Challenges in M(obile)-Learning

IRVINE, Calif./SAO PAULO, Brazil – June 28, 2006 – Larry Cooperman, director of technology and design at UC Irvine Extension’s UCI Distance Learning Center, has been selected to participate in a panel of international experts on e-learning to explore current and future trends and global influences in distance learning from a university perspective at the largest e-learning conference in Latin America. The 6th International Congress for e-Learning will take place in Sao Paulo, Brazil on June 28, 29, and 30, 2006.

UC Irvine Extension, considered to be one of the leading institutions in distance learning, was invited to attend the conference by the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV), the largest provider of online education in Brazil, in recognition of UC Irvine Extension’s outstanding achievements in developing cutting-edge modalities of education at a university level, including the provision of the first and only online University of California master’s degree program in Criminology, Law and Society.

Along with other internationally recognized leaders in e-learning, UC Irvine Extension’s Cooperman will participate in a “Socratic Panel,” where he will discuss the impact of learning trends and modalities of education on professional and organizational performance.

In the panel discussion, Cooperman will address some of the difficulties in measuring return on investment for learning at a university level, the economies that online education creates for businesses, and the accommodations it provides for students.

In a separate presentation entitled “Why m(obile)-learning?” Cooperman will examine the opportunities and challenges in utilizing cell phone technologies to augment online education classes.

“We are on the cusp of another major platform shift in computing,” said Cooperman, who will explore the positive aspects of m(obile)-learning in terms of convenience and accessibility to students. He will also address several of the key problems that remain to be solved, such as converting data from computers to QVGA devices.

Cooperman holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and a master’s from UC Berkeley. He has twenty years of experience in educational multi-media and has spoken internationally at conferences in Singapore, Portugal, and Korea. His most recent publications include “Crossing International Borders with Learning Content: Cultural, Contractual and Technical Challenges” (2006) and “Instructional Design and Online Education” (2006).
